Weekly Reading Highlights (June 15th 2009)

The book the girls were most excited to hear from this week was The last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Anderws Edwards (yes! from the Sound of Music!). She also wrote the book Mandy, which we read last December and loved as well. This book is different, it's a fantasty. 3 siblings, ages 7 to 13, meet up with a man they call Professor, who had just won the Nobel Prize for his work in genetics. He tells them about a creature called a Whangdoodle and the book is all about the serach for one.... which involves going through a tunnel to another land where the flowers smell like baking bread. Very unusal and fun.

Ella was really happy to see I got another Jenny Linsky story, though this one was much shorter than the other two books we've read about this silly black cat. The School For Cats is basically about how Jenny gets sent away to what amounts to be cat camp for the summer and wants to run away...

We got a great book called Be the Boss of Your Stress, which has been pretty helpful. Everybody feels stress now and then and this book is full of ways to relax and let it go. It's really colorful and fun to read, with all sorts of lists to see where you're at. We also checked out Be the Boss of Your Sleep, which is a good book too.

Ella really enjoyed listening to the audio version of Ramona Forever, the one where Ramona's mother gets pregnant and has a baby girl. It's just a great story, and I think it's been heard in this home over 10 times in the past 3 years. It is a family favorite and no matter how many times I hear it, I still smile and laugh at Romona's antics.

Another audio book that we've heard over 4 times in the past couple years is Half Magic. This is a really funny, magical book that we checked out several times from the library and until I decided to buy the CD. I love hearing it just about as much as Laurel and Ella do.
