The circle of life turns in unexpected ways.Earth Mother awakes with the dawn. As she walks the land, swims the seas, and climbs the mountains, nurturing all of creation, she comes across Man, Frog, and Mosquito. They each give her thanks for nature’s bounty, yet can’t help but give her advice about making their lives better. Everybody’s got an opinion, it seems, and Earth Mother is amused when it becomes clear that the circle of life is not without a healthy dose of cosmic humor.

Gooney Bird Greene

SarahKate's Notes:

This gem of a book was written for Louis Lowry's youngest audience and it had my girls dancing around me begging for more than 2 chapters a night. It's a short book, just 69 pages, and we read it in a few days. I almost didn't even get the book from the library because it is all about being in 2nd grade at school, and we homeschool. But after reading one good review after another I finally caved in and cringed for the first chapter or two about all the schoolish things. But then I got over it and loved it.
Gooney Bird is a unique and bold young lady, who says she wants to be smack in the middle of everything. She loves to tell stories and is a gifted storyteller. The teacher is trying to teach about how to write a good story and Gooney Bird stands up and *shows* what it is to tell a good story. Every day, for a week she has different stories, that are all absolutely true.' They have titles like, "Why I was late for school was beacuase I was directing an orchestra".
This books left all 3 of us inspired to tell stories, and that there are invislbe stories around everyone, things like how you got your name or how you came to live where you do and so on. This book is an incredible inspriation to write and I strongly recommend it!

Two-time Newbery Medalist Lois Lowry introduces a new girl in class who loves being the center of attention and tells the most entertaining “absolutely true” stories.

There’s never been anyone like Gooney Bird Greene at Watertower Elementary School. What other new kid comes to school wearing pajamas and cowboy boots one day and a polka-dot t-shirt and tutu on another? Gooney Bird has to sit right smack in the middle of the class because she likes to be in the middle of everything. She is the star of story time and keeps her teacher and classmates on the edge of their seats with her “absolutely true” stories. But what about her classmates? Do they have stories good enough to share?

Roxaboxen

SarahKate's Notes:

This book sweeps you up in the imagination of children who spend their summer building a town, Roxaboxen, out of rocks and bits of desert glass. This book is truly a favorite of my (then) 7 yo, and has been for years.

Marian called it Roxaboxen. (She always knew the name of everything.) There across the road, it looked like any rocky hill -- nothing but sand and rocks, some old wooden boxes, cactus and greasewood and thorny ocotillo -- but it was a special place: a sparkling world of jeweled homes, streets edged with the whitest stones, and two ice cream shops.
