Reading Highlights (June 8th 2009)
Good weather and extended playdates resulted in reading less this week, and so the book the girls were most excited to hear was Weetamoo: Heart of Pocassets. Personally, I really enjoyed this book, I loved hearing about a side of history that is most often passed over. The author writes, "The Native women whom most people in the United States tend to honor are those such as Pocahontas and Sacajawea, who were helpful to the European newcomers. But there were many other brave women like Weetamoo who fought to perserve their own land and culture and gave their lives to that cause." There is a part of this book where Weetamoo and her best friend go on vision quests and have visions of the massacre that really does happen to their people. That part of history is not covered in the actual diary, but it is mentioned in the historical note. I found it all to be very fascinating, but this is one of those book that I think the girls would have enjoyed much more in a few years.
