Not too long ago, in earth time, no one thought the universe had a history. The scientific and religious experts believed that the world had been created as it is today and that nothing had changed. Those experts did their best but they were wrong--really wrong. The Story of Science: Aristotle Leads the Way tells the amazing but true story of the quest to answer an important question: What is this universe of ours all about? From the lost city of Alexandria with its gigantic lighthouse and steam-powered vehicles, to faraway lands where Hindu and Arab mathematicians invented the number zero, Hakim invites readers of all ages to meet the forefathers of modern science and experience their greatest discoveries in astronomy, math, and physics. Along the way, readers learn the answers to questions like:

What can a baboon bone tell us about calendars?

Why can't we feel the earth moving?

How did math contribute to Archimedes' death?

The Far Side of the Loch: The Martha Years, Book Two (Little House)

SarahKate's Notes:

Another wonderful tale of Martha Morse, now 9 and adjusting to having to grow up and not be so wild. We absolutely love this series, I especially enjoy all the details about every day life. ***PLEASE NOTE: I am not referring to the book amazon insists on pulling up, I am referring to the UNabridged version, which has a cover with Martha bending down to play with a hedgehog.

The Golden Treasury of Children's Literature

SarahKate's Notes:

This was one of the books my parents read to me as a child, and we occasionally read stories from it. Please note that some of these stories may be considered too scary for young children.

The creators of THE RUNAWAY DINNER and PREVIOUSLY team up to imagine the comical world that comes to life when a lonely pencil starts to draw.

"One day that little pencil made a move, shivered slightly, quivered somewhat . . . and began to draw."

Welcome back Banjo, the boy from THE RUNAWAY DINNER! Once a pencil draws him, there's no telling what will come next — a dog, a cat, a chase (of course), and a paintbrush to color in an ever-expanding group of family and friends. But it's not long before the complaints begin — "This hat looks silly!" "My ears are too big!" — until the poor pencil has no choice but to draw . . . an eraser. Oh no! In the hands of Allan Ahlberg and Bruce Ingman, can anything but havoc and hilarity ensue?

When Debbie gives Tina a cardboard piano, she is sure that Tina will love it. After all, Debbie spent a long time making it, and it looks just like a real piano. Now Tina can learn to play, too. It will be so amazing.

But just because you are friends with somebody, and just because you are the same in most ways, doesn't mean that you will always see eye to eye.

Friendship can be tricky. Really, really tricky. Even for true best friends. Even for Debbie and Tina.
