Swallows and Amazons (Godine Storyteller)

SarahKate's Notes:

Written in 1930 this is a wonderful book about 4 siblings, the youngest being 7, who go off sailing and camp on a 'deserted' island for a couple weeks. Their mother gives them permission and checks up on them now and then, but mainly they are on their own and have a great adventure, and make friends with some other sailing kids. I really love how incredibly independant these kids are! It's set in England's Lake District and is full of sailing lingo and realistic adventures. We are really excited to continue on, this is the first in a series of about a dozen books. We all agree that this is one of the best books we've ever heard.

The MAGGIE B

SarahKate's Notes:

This is a heartwarming story of a little girl's wish upon a star that came true. "North Star, star of the sea, I wish for a ship named after me, to sail for a day, alone and free, with someone nice for company." The ship is small and marvelous, with a farm and animals on the poop deck! The good company turns out to be her little brother, who she cares for so lovingly. Magical illustrations.

Hitty Her First Hundred Years

SarahKate's Notes:

Published in 1929 this book is a classic, a story of a wooden doll carved in the early 1800s. In 262 pages we read about her first 100 years, being lost and found by one little girl after another. Her adventures were fascinating and the girls (ages 5 & 8) begged for more each time. In each chapter we encountered at least 2 words we had to look up in the dictionary. This is an outstanding story! We each give it 5 stars.
