Pickles To Pittsburgh

SarahKate's Notes:

The children in our home (our own and visiting) love this book! Of all the books I read at story time, they told me this was favorite. However, it's not nearly as fantastic as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems

SarahKate's Notes:

This beautifully illustrated book has a wide variety of poems. Our girls (then ages 5 & 8) picked a few out to commit to memory, such as The Owl and the Pussy Cat by Edward Lear and The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. The book also has less familiar poems such as The Beautiful by W.H. Davies:
Three things there are more beautiful
Than any man could wish to see:
The first it is a full-rigged ship
Sailing with all her sails set free;
The second, when the wind and sun
Are playing in a field of corn;
The third, a woman, young and fair
Showing her child before it is born.

A Child's Good Night Book Board Book

SarahKate's Notes:

This is a very simple, soothing book about how all creatures on the planet sleep at night. At the end there is a beautiful picture of angels holding children and small animals as they sleep. The last page is a prayer: "Dear Father, hear and bless/Thy beasts and singing birds,/and guard with tenderness/Small things that have no words."

Franklin's Friendship Treasury

SarahKate's Notes:

Since Laurel (then 9) has been enjoying hearing the Franklin stories so much, I got another in the series, Franklin's Friendship Treasury. As soon as the girls saw this book they wanted to hear all 4 stories right away. Part of me finds these stories boring, but I must admit I really love how the parents talk to thier kids. Franklin is a good role model, even if he doesn't always do the right thing, he makes it right in the end.

The mother sings to her sleeping baby: "I'll love you forever / I'll love you for always / As long as I'm living / My baby you'll be." She still sings the same song when her baby has turned into a fractious 2-year-old, a slovenly 9-year-old, and then a raucous teen. So far so ordinary--but this is one persistent lady. When her son grows up and leaves home, she takes to driving across town with a ladder on the car roof, climbing through her grown son's window, and rocking the sleeping man in the same way.
