Fifteen years ago, long before anyone else thought of tucking actual letters and notes inside a book, Little, Brown published The Jolly Postman by Allan and Janet Ahlberg. This wonderful book gave children a chance to read letters sent from one fairy tale or Mother Goose character to another. Among the funny notes was one from Jack, who lolled on a sun-drenched island, thanking the Giant for the gold that let him afford such a nifty vacation. All this amusing correspondence was deftly illustrated and the book attracted hordes of eager readers.
The Golden Treasury of Children's Literature
This was one of the books my parents read to me as a child, and we occasionally read stories from it. Please note that some of these stories may be considered too scary for young children.

If I Built a Car
What a great book! I love the illustrations and how this boy imagines such a neat car. I read this book several times already this week.

We absolutely loved gazing at all the beautiful, richly detailed pictures in the book. This retelling of King Midas is full of such love between father and daughter, a pleasure to read.

Wow! We loved the illustrations in this book, a true adaptation of the Snow White tale translated from Brothers Grimm. In the end the wicked queen puts on the red hot slippers and dances to her death, and I realize this is the translation from the original story, but our girls didn't understand why or how this happened. Otherwise, it is a fantastic, gripping read!
