Croco'nile
We were studying ancient Egypt (through Story of the World - another great book) and this was one of the book recommendations. The illustrations are so detailed and fascinating, and the text is poetic. It's a story of a brother and sister who raise a crocodile, become stowaways on a ship, and discover that they are *quite* talented at carving stone and painting in the classic old Egyptian style. An exciting adventure that I have read countless times to the delight of my children in the past 2 weeks.

Puppy Too Small (Golden Naptime Tales)
Our (then) 2 year old loved to hear book over and over, and I loved to read it. It starts out, " 'I'm too small!' wailed Puppy. 'I can't reach the doorknob.' 'But you can reach the cookies on the table,' said Mouse. 'Please share one with me.' And Puppy did." The whole book is like that, one situation after another where puppy feels he is too small to do something, but there is something helpful he can do, and he does it. The ending is a sweet acknowledgment by Mama. This is a gentle message of empowerment.
