The Wheel on the School
We listened to the audio version of The Wheel on the School (320 pages), a 1955 Newberry Winner that had all of us interested in riding in the car so we could hear it. It was really neat to hear about life in Holland, during a time when the village school had only 6 children, with only one girl - Lina. She surprises the teacher by independently writing a short composition, wondering why storks don't nest in their fishing village of Shora but they nest in all the neighboring villages. This inspires them to figure it out and they are are encouraged to spend their school time to work out the solution. It sounds dry but this is a very exciting book! This is a fantastic book about the power of hope, and the idea that it take a village to raise a child.

Why do the storks no longer come to the little Dutch fishing village of Shora to nest? It was Lina, one of the six schoolchildren who first asked the question, and she set the others to wondering. And sometimes when you begin to wonder, you begin to make things happen. So the children set out to bring the storks back to Shora. The force of their vision put the whole village to work until at last the dream began to come true. Winner, 1955 Newbery MedalNotable Children's Books of 1940–1970 (ALA)1963 Lewis Carroll Shelf Award

The Curious Garden
We had a garden this year and it has been wonderful. I got several books about the joy of gardens and this is one we like - The Curious Garden by Peter Brown. What happens when someone helps nature reclaim an old elevated railway? It's beautiful.

One boy's quest for a greener world... one garden at a time.
While out exploring one day, a little boy named Liam discovers a struggling garden and decides to take care of it. As time passes, the garden spreads throughout the dark, gray city, transforming it into a lush, green world.
This is an enchanting tale with environmental themes and breathtaking illustrations that become more vibrant as the garden blooms. Red-headed Liam can also be spotted on every page, adding a clever seek-and-find element to this captivating picture book.
Puppy Too Small (Golden Naptime Tales)
Our (then) 2 year old loved to hear book over and over, and I loved to read it. It starts out, " 'I'm too small!' wailed Puppy. 'I can't reach the doorknob.' 'But you can reach the cookies on the table,' said Mouse. 'Please share one with me.' And Puppy did." The whole book is like that, one situation after another where puppy feels he is too small to do something, but there is something helpful he can do, and he does it. The ending is a sweet acknowledgment by Mama. This is a gentle message of empowerment.

A Little House Christmas Treasury: Festive Holiday Stories
I bought this book for our Christmas Collection and I am so grateful I did. I love to hear these stories of the simple Christmases long ago, when children were thrilled to get a penny in their stocking. Each story if from a different time in Laura's life and paints such a beautiful picture of their lives.

Fairy Tales for the New Age
In my opinion this is one of the finest collections of fairy tales
I've read. They aren't syrupy and super-positive. They are gentle,
original stories of children overcoming their fears, learning powerful
lessons, and meeting magical spirits. We savor this book and I read
the a story from it every few weeks and it is a real treat the whole
family enjoys.
