I wish I lived a thousand years ago. There would be beautiful castles, kings and queens, good knights, bad knights, fair ladies in danger, evil dragons from the mountains, and a giant troll that roars and eats anything. What kid hasn?t dreamed of living in fairy-tale times?hasn?t imagined himself as the bravest knight in all the land (or at least the knight?s faithful squire). As he has done in his celebrated There?s a Nightmare in My Closet and its follow-ups, Mercer Mayer brings childhood fantasy hilariously to life here.

Gobbolino the Witch's Cat (Young Puffin Modern Classics)

SarahKate's Notes:

Gobbolino the Witch's Cat is the 2nd chapter book in a series by Ursula Moray Williams, published in 1942. The first, The Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse is a family favorite. This tale of a kitten trying to find a home is very interesting, a great book for young children to hear.

Half Magic

SarahKate's Notes:

This book is timeless and hilarious. One of the most wonderful parts of my life is laughing out loud with my children and we did that many, many times throughout this book. Four children find a magic charm that will grant wishes, and how they handle it and the lessons they learn is fascinating. The imagination in this book is inspiring.

Edward Eager has been delighting young readers for more than 40 years with stories that mix magic and reality. Half Magic, the most popular of his tales about four children who encounter magical coins, time-travel herb gardens, and other unlikely devices, is a warm, funny, original adventure. The title refers to a coin that the children find. Through a comical series of coincidences, they discover that the coin is magic. Well, it's not totally magic--it's only (you guessed it) half magic. That means there's a certain logic to the wishes one must make to generate a desired outcome.

Alice's Pop-up Wonderland

SarahKate's Notes:

I think we only read the story once, and this greatly abridged version of Alice in Wonderland was mildly interesting. The real fun with this book was opening up to create the Wonderland and the little paper doll people and creatures that came with it. This pop up paper doll scene provided hours of imaginative play.

The Whangdoodle was once the wisest, the kindest, and the most extraordinary creature in the world. Then he disappeared and created a wonderful land for himself and all the other remarkable animals -- the ten-legged Sidewinders, the little furry Flukes, the friendly Whiffle Bird, and the treacherous, "oily" Prock. It was an almost perfect place where the last of the really great Whangdoodles could rule his kingdom with "peace, love and a sense of fun"-- apart from and forgotten by people.

But not completely forgotten. Professor Savant believed in the Whangdoodle. And when he told the three Potter children of his search for the spectacular creature, Lindy, Tom, and Ben were eager to reach Whangdoodleland.

With the Professor's help, they discovered the secret way. But waiting for them was the scheming Prock, who would use almost any means to keep them away from his beloved king.

The Enchanted Castle (Puffin Classics)

SarahKate's Notes:

We all loved listening to the audio version of this book so much that we would love to hear it again and again. Very funny!

Afterword by Peter Glassman. "Originally published in 1907, this book concerns four likable English children and their adventures with a magic ring. It's hard to imagine a more appealing showcase for Nesbit's fantasy than this handsome volume....Zelinsky's artwork is as lively as the story and very much of the period....Beautiful."--Booklist. A Books of Wonder Classic.

Imagine a Night

SarahKate's Notes:

The paintings in this book are extraordinary! One shows three children jumping on beds, and patchwork quilts change into rivers and farms seen from high above. "Imagine a night … when you can't sleep, and so you jump high enough to soar over a quilt of fields and forests." Very magical and inspiring to the imagination.

Imagine a night when you can ride your bike right up the stairs to your bed. Imagine a night when your toy train rumbles on its tracks out of your room and roars back in, full sized, ready for you to hop on for a nighttime adventure. Imagine a night when a farmer plays a lullaby on his fiddle, and his field of sunflowers begins to dip and sway to the rhythm.
