The Hollyhock Wall
Baba Yaga and Vasilisa the Brave
Our (then) 5 year old wants to hear the story of Vasilisa again and again. It's a harsh fairy tale, with wicked stepmothers and witches that eat people. But the beautiful Vasilisa gracefully triumphs, all because of her (dead) mother's love contained in a magical doll.

Sweet, lovely Vasilisa lives with her jealous stepmother and stepsisters on the edge of a dark forest inhabited by the evil witch Baba Yaga. One night the stepmother sends Vasilisa to visit Baba Yaga, an errand from which the gentle girl has little chance of returning alive. "An engaging text and accomplished paintings set this version apart....A stylized and classy offering."--School Library Journal.
Crinkleroot's Guide to Knowing the Trees (Crinkleroot)
I think this is one of the best tree guide books for children I've ever read. Our guide is a Nome looking man, who was born in the trees. This book is full of fascinating facts that answer questions as an adult I've always wondered about trees. The girls enjoyed it almost as much as I did!

When the Sun Rose
This is another one of our absolute favorite books for the very young child. A simple, colorful, magical story of two girls who meet and become friends. This is a masterpiece, unfortunately out of print (but it is available through the library!).

The Quiltmaker's Gift celebrates the quilting tradition, the value of generosity, and the spirit of community in a beautiful and touching fable for our times. This richly illustrated picture book celebrates the joy of giving and gently emphasizes the age-old truth that material wealth does not necessarily buy happiness. The Quiltmaker's Gift is a heartwarming children's fable, a celebration of quilters and quilting, and a challenging adult parable all wrapped into one.
Grandfather Twilight
Of all the gifted artist/authors, Barbara Berger is my top favorite. This book is a beautiful night time story that young children really love. It melts my heart, and I give thanks for the tremendous amount of originality and beauty this book holds.

All the woodland creatures watch in silence as he performs his very special evening task and returns to his house among the trees. Here is Barbara Helen Berger's enormously popular classic--now in a board book format that retains all of the magic of the original. With its soft glowing illustrations, poetic text, and new reader-friendly size, the Grandfather Twilight Board Book is perfect for cuddling up with at bedtime.

When Old Grandfather Winter disappears into his ice palace high in the mountains, Young Robin chirps her wake-up song to the Root Children deep underground. ³Wake up,² she sings, ³it¹s time for the masquerade!² Right away, the Root Children set to work sewing their flowering costumes and painting bugs with rainbows until they sparkle like jewels. Then they frolic out into the world in a joyous chorus of frolic and song all through Summer, until the frosty Autumn winds blow away the leaves and flowers.
