Big Susan

SarahKate's Notes:

This is a really sweet story of how the dolls in a young girl's dollhouse come to life on the night before Christmas. Our (then) 6 year old enjoyed it so much that she had me read it to her twice in the time we had it checked out from the library – each time it took 3 or 4 days to read it. What I enjoyed most was how kind all the family members were to each other and how enthusiastic and grateful they were. Susan is the little girl who carefully moves them and speaks for them, and they think very highly of her. This year, for Christmas, they have received a little baby, who they call Little Susan. " 'This year we got something better – oh! A million times better!' said all the children together. 'We got you, Little Susan! We got you!'"

Hardbound Book - Raggedy Ann Stories By Johnny Gruelle

SarahKate's Notes:

Each page has a small/large color illustration, so this is the perfect beginning chapter book - though we just read one story at a sitting and never went in any particular order. These are the classic stories (written roughly 80 years ago) about Raggedy, the endlessly cheerful doll and her adventures.

THE LITTLE WOODEN DOLL by Margery Williams Bianco, with pictures by Pamela Bianco (1953 Small format Hardcover 6.5 x 5 inches,

SarahKate's Notes:

This book was so tiny and the chapters so short that we read it in one sitting. It is the story of a very old doll who sits in the attic, lonely for children. However, when some find her they reject her because she has no clothes or hair. So the little animals and insects create these for her and carry her to a home where there is a little girl who appreciates her. Short and sweet.

Hitty Her First Hundred Years

SarahKate's Notes:

Published in 1929 this book is a classic, a story of a wooden doll carved in the early 1800s. In 262 pages we read about her first 100 years, being lost and found by one little girl after another. Her adventures were fascinating and the girls (ages 5 & 8) begged for more each time. In each chapter we encountered at least 2 words we had to look up in the dictionary. This is an outstanding story! We each give it 5 stars.
