The Children of Noisy Village

SarahKate's Notes:

Our children adore these books (there's 2 in the series - this is book 1) and love to hear the stories over and over, year after year. This is one of the absolute best chapter books I've ever come across for children. 6 children live in 3 homes close together out in the country in Norway. We always laugh out loud together when we read these books.

The story begins when Uncle McAllister brings a "wee bit of Scotland"--a tadpole to be precise--to Louis for his birthday. Delighted, Louis names him Alphonse and brings him to school for show-and-tell. A diet of cheeseburgers allows the creature to grow by leaps and bounds, and he soon outgrows his jar, the kitchen sink, and the bathtub.

A Little House Christmas Treasury: Festive Holiday Stories

SarahKate's Notes:

I bought this book for our Christmas Collection and I am so grateful I did. I love to hear these stories of the simple Christmases long ago, when children were thrilled to get a penny in their stocking. Each story if from a different time in Laura's life and paints such a beautiful picture of their lives.

"Michael," said Karl. "There's a really big bear in the backyard." This is how three children meet Stillwater, a giant panda who moves into the neighborhood and tells amazing tales. To Addie he tells a story about the value of material goods. To Michael he pushes the boundaries of good and bad. And to Karl he demonstrates what it means to hold on to frustration. With graceful art and simple stories that are filled with love and enlightenment, Jon Muth -- and Stillwater the bear -- present three ancient Zen tales that are sure to strike a chord in everyone they touch.
