Understood Betsy

SarahKate's Notes:

First published in 1916, I was amazed that at this time there were women who read books on how to be good mothers and went to Mothers Groups... which is what Aunt Frances does to learn how to take care of her orphaned niece, and ends up sheltering her, creating a child that is timid and frail. However, the story really begins when Aunt Francis has to take care of her mother and puts Elizabeth Ann in the care of other relatives... where she blooms. It is remarkable to watch Elizabeth gain courage, confidence and good health through the book. We all loved this moving story very much.

A warm and charming portrayal of life in the early 1900s. Sheltered 9 year old Elizabeth Ann has always heard her Aunt Frances talk about "those horrid Vermont cousins." Now she is terrified. Aunt Frances can no longer take care of her, and she has been sent to stay with her New England relatives. "Betsy" gradually comes to enjoy the challenge of living with her country cousins, and she has a difficult choice to make. A delightful book.

The Children of Noisy Village

SarahKate's Notes:

Our children adore these books (there's 2 in the series - this is book 1) and love to hear the stories over and over, year after year. This is one of the absolute best chapter books I've ever come across for children. 6 children live in 3 homes close together out in the country in Norway. We always laugh out loud together when we read these books.

Lion in the Box, The

SarahKate's Notes:

Margerite was born in 1889 and this book holds many values of a time past. A widow works in an office and leaves her five children in the apartment at home, and they take care of each other with such tenderness. It is a story of a simple Christmas made surprisingly abundant with "the lion in the box." A gem.

Half Magic

SarahKate's Notes:

This book is timeless and hilarious. One of the most wonderful parts of my life is laughing out loud with my children and we did that many, many times throughout this book. Four children find a magic charm that will grant wishes, and how they handle it and the lessons they learn is fascinating. The imagination in this book is inspiring.

Edward Eager has been delighting young readers for more than 40 years with stories that mix magic and reality. Half Magic, the most popular of his tales about four children who encounter magical coins, time-travel herb gardens, and other unlikely devices, is a warm, funny, original adventure. The title refers to a coin that the children find. Through a comical series of coincidences, they discover that the coin is magic. Well, it's not totally magic--it's only (you guessed it) half magic. That means there's a certain logic to the wishes one must make to generate a desired outcome.

To say that this particular apple tree is a "giving tree" is an understatement. In Shel Silverstein's popular tale of few words and simple line drawings, a tree starts out as a leafy playground, shade provider, and apple bearer for a rambunctious little boy. Making the boy happy makes the tree happy, but with time it becomes more challenging for the generous tree to meet his needs. When he asks for money, she suggests that he sell her apples. When he asks for a house, she offers her branches for lumber. When the boy is old, too old and sad to play in the tree, he asks the tree for a boat.
